Kells Comedy

I have been involved with the Kells Comedy Festival since it began in 2009. The brief for the brand was very loose, “be funny” was one of the only guidelines. So, I began the idea with looking at Kells itself, famous mainly for it’s history and it’s historical monuments. I brought this idea into the design, taking the round tower and St Columba’s church and including them both in the logo. I also used a mix of various “Irish” typefaces to create the quirky design.

For the 2009 design, I used the idea of the vikings and pulled upon their visit to Kells. I placed the whole design under the ground dotted with various skulls and axes. I left the logo sitting above ground over the rich world beneath.

For the 2010 design, I used the idea of the book of Kells. While looking through it I was struck by the amount of colourful characters within. So I redrew these fellas with a little artistic license and used them in the design.
